Urban Nomads | Including Transient Communities in Cities:
A Case of Pastoral Communities
In this piece, I weave a personal narrative, backed with research based in ground reality, to shed light on the challenges pastoral nomadic communities face in urban landscapes. Inspired by watching a pastoral family set up camp near my apartment in Pune, I explore how cities that are built for permanence often overlook those who live on the move. The essay examines issues like restricted mobility due to land policies, climate change disruptions, and the lack of legal land rights, while exploring possibilities in urban design and policy solutions to foster inclusion, dignity, and equity for these communities.

Memory and Metamorphosis: Heterotopias of Time | Temporal transformations of Ice factories in Bombay and Sharjah
The essay delves into the multiple lives led by 2 intriguing, industrial buildings- Ice factories in Bombay and Sharjah respectively. One on the eastern end of the Arabian, the other on the west, speaking to one another, implicitly narrating their stories.
In the piece, I have attempted to use a braiding technique of combining fictional and non-fictional writing styles. The fictional bits are in italics where I imagine the past stories of the buildings whilst moving within these heterotopias of time (word coined by Michel Foucault for a building living temporal lives) in the present. Play along the Symphony of the Earth and the Sky in this Pune home
2023: The architects decided to use this as a design cue and syphoned the blues of the sky into the living room, making it flow as a royal indigo hue onto a bounding wall. Umber brown wainscoting accentuates the fluid tonality of the wall- defining and grounding it. This accent wall was the starting point that led to the other design decisions. A splash of earthy tones- rust orange and burnt browns complement the indigo and together they conjure up a symphony of the earth and the sky.
