Urban Nomads | Including Transient Communities in Cities:
A Case of Pastoral Communities

Essay published in the souvenir of Institute of Urban Designers India (IUDI)'s NatCon 2025

In this piece, I weave a personal narrative, backed with research based in ground reality, to shed light on the challenges pastoral nomadic communities face in urban landscapes. Inspired by watching a pastoral family set up camp near my apartment in Pune, I explore how cities that are built for permanence often overlook those who live on the move. The essay examines issues like restricted mobility due to land policies, climate change disruptions, and the lack of legal land rights, while exploring possibilities in urban design and policy solutions to foster inclusion, dignity, and equity for these communities.
